FAA - Overview

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the agency of the United States Department of Transportation responsible for the regulation and oversight of civil aviation within the U.S., as well as operation and development of the National Airspace System. is the largest modern transportation agency and a governmental body with powers to regulate all aspects of civil aviation. Its primary mission is to ensure safety of civil aviation. Regulating civil aviation to promote safety. Encouraging and developing civil aeronautics, including new aviation technology. Developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft. Researching and developing the National Airspace System and civil aeronautics.

FAA-Roles

Because it is 'A MUST' regulation (not standard) for aviation, space and defence industries/services to get FAA approved. There are various part of FAA such as FAA Part 145, FAA Part 145,...depend on which part your firm related to. These are FAA roles: 

  • Regulating U.S. commercial space transportation
  • Regulating air navigation facilities' geometric and flight inspection standards
  • Issuing, suspending, or revoking pilot certificates
  • Developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both civil and military aircraft
  • Encouraging and developing civil aeronautics, including new aviation technology, and, so on.

FAA- how to achieve

14 CFR Part 21 defines three separate certifications: type, production, and airworthiness.

  • Type certification is the approval of the design of the aircraft and all component parts (including propellers, engines, control stations, etc.).
  • Production certification is the approval to manufacture duplicate products under an FAA-approved type design.
  • Airworthiness certification is necessary for operation of civil aircraft outside of 14 CFR Part 107 or without an exemption under the Special Authority for Certain Unmanned Systems (U.S.C. 44807).
